A detective in a child’s body tries to solve a contactless murder. A girl almost touches her lower back. Two women are separated by a dildo. In Three Forms of Exhaustion, deferral becomes a mode of reading that registers effects before their causes. When what wears you out is also what keeps you going, conclusions are secondary. Through close readings of lesbian pornography and the anime series Case Closed, Zhao offers a gestural phenomenology structured by prolepsis, anticipation, and telepathy, one that rethinks historical links between queerness and criminality as it revisits the scene of childhood sexual awakening.
